Kindergarten through eighth grade students of Science Academy of Chicago participate annually in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Students are given a list of grade-appropriate words to study with their classmates at the classroom level. Once those are mastered, they are provided with more challenging words at higher grade levels. The winners of those challenges move on to the school-wide Spelling Bee organized by Miss Weber and hosted by SAC. Awards are given to the top 3 contestants and the first-place winner moves on to compete at the Regional Qualifier in Lincolnwood Illinois. Participation in competitions like these reinforce the importance of language skills and help the students with word recognition and spelling proficiency. It’s also a lot of fun!
